Greening the Green in Maplewood

Four Ways to Think Green In Maplewood Today

Green Drinks, green gardens, wearin' o' the green....
Fear not, fellow Maplewoodians! Though the sky is gray and the rains prevail, tomorrow brings us March and puts us within three weeks of the official start of spring.
But if you can't wait that long, here are four things to put you in mind of "green" on this day:
  1. The Maplewood Green Team hosts Green Drinks tonight at coda kitchen and bar at 7:30 p.m. Susan Switalski, the owner of Ecomaids in Fairfield, NJ, will speak about green residential cleaning — how using the right methods can improve indoor air quality; protect the health and safety of people and pets; and hot to do it all in a sustainable manner. Everyone is welcome, so spread the word! No fee, cash bar.
  2. Green Fest and the THE GARBAGE CAN-tata are coming to Maplewood! A garbage dump comes to hip-hopping life while teaching the three R’s – REDUSE, REUSE and RECYCLE.  The cast is middle school kids and there are also puppets made out of garbage; the show is produced by The Strollers. The run includes a Green Fest on Saturday, March 12 with eco-friendly workshops for the entire family. Performances are: Fridays, March 11, 18 & 25 at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. followed by the Green Fest at 12:30 p.m.; Saturdays & Sundays, March 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27 at 2:00 p.m. All performances are at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts, and all tickets for the show are $7. Tickets for the show & Green Fest together are $10; the Green Fest alone is $5. Performance tickets may also be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/156518 (Ph: 1-800-838-3006) or by calling the box office at 973-761-8453.  (Green Fest tickets are purchased at the box office.)
  3. Maplewood Community Garden registration continues through March 3 on its website. You can also register in person at Town Hall from 9-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2. The garden was a blooming success last year — with a well-maintained and productive location behind town hall. That location will return (and the town is continuing to work on drainage issues), but new locations are possibly being added this year, including a space behind the Maplewood Volunteer First Aid Squad. At the squad, said Community Garden organizer Irene Dunsavage, "We will be putting in fruits and fruit trees, in addition to individual plots." Dunsavage anticipates 32 plots at the site.
  1. It's only 17 days to St. Paddy's Day! Visit the St. James's Gate website to keep track using the St. Paddy's countdown clock. And get a look at the statue of St. Patrick currently residing at Cryan's Beef and Ale House in South Orange. The statue is currently at the center of a controversy: formerly housed in Sacred Heart Church in Newark, the statue was returned to the Cryan family when the church was closed. Some think it doesn't belong in a bar.
