Local Singer and New Author to Perform and Read from her new Book "I Want To" at Livingston's Barnes and Noble Saturday May 4th 2pm

Entertainer Jill Criscuolo Expands her Talents with a Noteworthy Venture into Children’s Book Publishing with her Literary Debut “I Want To…”
West Orange, NJ (PRWEB) April 14, 2013

Entertainer Jill Criscuolo is expanding her horizons and has made a noteworthy venture into the Children’s book-publishing arena. The first time author is launching a promotional tour for her illustrated children’s book “I Want To…” on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 2pm at BARNES & NOBLE Bookstore, 112 Eisenhower Parkway, Livingston, New Jersey.
At the book launch and signing event she will also entertain the audience with a live performance in a setting of literature and music.
The book is the first of a forthcoming series whose main character is Frankie, a little girl who takes us in on numerous hopeful adventures.
“I want to”, as an aspiration is endless for children and adults alike. Frankie uses her imagination to show how through desiring, how possible things could be; that dreams can indeed come true. Jill’s inspiration comes from many experiences and things, and she says this book in particular was inspired by all children of the world that say, "I Want To..."
“I believe that adults should encourage kids, help them to discover who they are and persuade them to use their imagination in positive ways to not only benefit themselves, but others as well.”
The author’s use of imagination enables her to create wonderful things, which are expressed in her singing, writing, and acting projects. Her mission through her work is to promote feelings of well-being, self-love and self-acceptance. She is intent on creating books that will entice young readers to read more and explore the many options available to them. Ultimately, to instill a feeling that there is always room to learn, grow, and be imaginative whatever age you are!
She stays true to the precept that as we look around, everything we see was at one time imagined before becoming a reality.
“I Want To…” is a delightful storybook, published by Trafford Publishing, and now available in e-Book or soft-cover form on all major online booksellers outlets. With brilliantly colorful illustrations by Daniela Sutter, the scenes of the book are appealing. Also available in soft-cover version is the coloring book, wherein children can apply themselves creatively with their own colors and words of choice to show their personal “I Want To” wishes.
Take a lyrical adventure, a journey into wonders of the world and the beauty of life through the eyes and imagination of a child. http://www.jcebooks.com
Jill’s kick-off book tour to retail markets will further branch out to Libraries, Schools, Hospitals, and Community organizations. Additionally, she will be donating books to kids in various areas as part of her giving back initiative.

Forever exploring artistic avenues to move forward, her foray into literary publishing starts another chapter in her endeavors.

Maplewood South Orange School Principal Proud of Columbia's Newest Rankings

Superintendent, Principal Respond to CHS Ranking, Silver Medal

US News and World Reports released state and national rankings: CHS earned a silver medal

By Marcia Worth

Columbia High School was awarded a Silver Medal as one of the Best High Schools in the Country, according to U.S. News and World Reports.

In their annual Best High Schools edition, Columbia High School ranked 36th in New Jersey (out of 395), and 757th nationally (out of more than 21,000). This puts CHS in the top 10% of high schools in the State, and the top 4% of public high schools in the nation.

To be included in the national rankings, schools had to pass three steps which “ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmark” and also “assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.”

Superintendent Brian Osborne said: “We are very proud of this national recognition by U.S. News and World Reports . It is particularly gratifying to receive this honor given the methodology’s emphasis on 'serving all of its students well' and 'successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.' For many years we have been working diligently to improve the learning outcomes of all of our students by expanding opportunities for rigor for all students, and providing additional support to help all students succeed. Congratulations to Dr. Lilly, her outstanding faculty, our talented students and involved families for their dedication and commitment to excellence."

CHS Principal Lovie Lilly said: “These rankings are indicators that our strategic focus is defining the instructional pathways for teaching and learning at Columbia High School. Through our unified efforts, we will continue to refine our learning goals and establish clear expectations for student performance and success.”

Short Hills Greenwood Gardens Restored and Now Open to Public

According to WILLIAM GRIMES, NYT April 25th, 2013, Stewart Hartshorn--yes that one the school and street is named after, came to out with a fortune in hand from the sales of spring-roller window shades, bought land in Millburn Township in the 1870s, envisioning “a harmonious community for people who appreciated nature.” (for article: NYT). Like him, nature lovers came to the town known as Short Hills. Some of them laid out grand estates, ranking, in size and ambition, somewhere between Gatsby’s and Hearst’s. Few remain, but one, Greenwood Gardens, has been lifted from decades of decay and decrepitude to live a second life as a public park and cultural center. It opens on Sunday.

Explore Greenwood

Astride the western ridge of the Watchung Mountains and overlooking a vast preserve of forest and meadow, Greenwood Gardens is a contemporary garden rooted in the Arts & Crafts and Classical approaches to garden design, with Italianate garden terraces, grottoes, meandering moss-covered paths, allées of sycamore and spruces, ornamental trees and shrubs, and wildflower meadows, among other features, occupying over 28 acres.

greenwood yellen gateJust 45 minutes from Manhattan, Greenwood Gardens is removed from the sights and sounds of modernity. It is a place where people can come together to spend time and relax – whether the definition of relaxation be sitting on bench or practicing yoga in the open air. A visit to Greenwood Gardens can renew your mind and spirit through tours, workshops, and other educational programs.
Entrance Drive and Forecourt

Visitors to Greenwood Gardens will enter along the Sycamore Allée and continue past a cluster of rustic Arts & Crafts cottages to the parking lot. The first feature encountered is a legacy of the Day era, an extraordinary hand-wrought iron-grill gate created by master iron craftsman Samuel Yellin. Housed in the East Pavilion, the nine-foot-high gate depicts a menagerie of flora and fauna, from birds of paradise and parakeets to vines and ferns.
Formal Gardens

Connected to the East Pavilion is the red brick Georgian house built by the Blanchard family, which serves as an orientation center, its Colonial-styled center hallway opening onto an overlook terrace, where period climbing roses grow on and around a pair of wooden pergolas. From here drop three terraced gardens: the topmost Main Terrace, with waterside iris and carrex blue zinger (Carex flacca); the Croquet Terrace, with boxwood hedges; and the culmination, in the Garden of the Zodiac, where twelve pairs of classical columns are arranged in a demilune around a former reflecting pool.

main terrace view10 18 2012_SMWhere recently the Garden of the Zodiac’s perimeter was planted with evergreen shrubs, now pink peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) and white goat’s beard (Tragopogon dubius / pratensis) thrive, as well as spikes of cream, pink, and bronze foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) and an intermittent haze of blue and white catmints (Nepeta grandiflora) and sages. A bronze sculpture of a boy holding two geese by Emilio Angela has been reinstated in the center of the pool surrounded by clematis and roses.
Summerhouse and Teahouse

Footpaths and gardens to the south and east of these main terraces lead to a pair of round perches inspired by the Belvederes built during the Arts and Craft period in Britain. The Summerhouse and Teahouse are constructed of local sandstone with copper coursings around cone-shaped roofs. Their interiors feature walls and ceilings studded with blue, green and brown seashell-shaped Rookwood tiles and floors paved with pastel-hued Fulper tiles manufactured nearby in New Jersey.

Three-foot-tall limestone chess pieces—knight, pawn, queen, and king—line the horseshoe steps leading to the upper level of the Teahouse and the South Axis garden. Here dwarf iris (Iris lacustris), pink dianthus (Dianthus caryophyllus), Siberian iris (Iris sibirica) and small ornamental onion (Allium aflatunense) may be found nestled near four huge stone frogs. Granite Foo dogs are placed at opposite steps to the Teahouse, while an Oriental paperbush (Edgeworthia chrysantha) with little yellow flowers serves as a centerpiece connecting the walkway and the two stone follies.
Grapewalk and Cascade

The Blanchards’ taste for formal garden design may be seen as a visitor follows the Grape Walk toward the foot of the Water Cascade. From here one views the European inspired allée of plane trees and maples and two ponds that are home to swans and waterfowl—both the creation of Peter Blanchard, Jr.
Meadow and Ponds

At the terminus of this view, adjacent to the ponds and punctuating a field of wildflowers, is a fabulous wrought iron gate designed by Carrére and Hastings for the Frick residence in New York. All the outer edges of the Garden, in fact, will be devoted to natives: sugar maple (Acer saccharum), tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), oaks, hickories, native dogwoods, native azalea, Virginia sweet spire (Itea virginica), native hydrangeas, native wild trillium (Trillium erectum), Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium reptans), Virginia blue bells (Mertensia virginica), and coral bells (Heuchera sanguinea).
Barn and Pasture

Tucked away in the southeast corner of Greenwood Gardens is a barn and pasture that has been on site for more than a century and is home to goats and a variety of farm birds. Note: The Barn Complex is closed to visitors.

Columbia High Ranked 36th in New Jersey and Receives Silver Medal

Report: Columbia High Ranked 36th in New Jersey, 757 in Country

U.S. News and World Reports Best High Schools is released: Columbia received a silver medal

By Marcia Worth
April 24, 2013

Columbia High School is ranked number 36 in New Jersey in this year's U.S. News and World Report’s Best High Schools ranking released Tuesday.

In the fifth edition of the ranking, Columbia's national ranking on the list was 757th out of 21,000. The school did receive a silver medal from the publication for how it compared to other schools based on U.S. News ranking criteria.

The AP participation rate at Columbia High School is 43 percent. The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 62 percent. CHS has a student body of 1,797.

Nearby, Summit High School was ranked 18th in the state and Chatham High School was 13th.

In Essex County, Millburn High ranked 15th in New Jersey, 225th in the country. Livingston High ranked 29th in New Jersey, 401st in the country.

Additionally, West Orange, Montclair, West Essex, West Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Verona, Nutley and Glen Ridge high schools were unranked.

Topping the state were:

Biotechnology High School in Freehold — Ranked 8th nationally
High Technology High School in Lincroft — Ranked 12th nationally
Bergen County Academies in Hackensack — Ranked 34th nationally
Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School in Jersey City — Ranked 50th nationally
Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro — Ranked 73rd nationally
Middlesex Co Academy in Edison — Ranked 146th nationally
Academy for Allied Health Sciences in Scotch Plains — Ranked 159th nationally
West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South in Princeton — Ranked 162nd nationally
Academy of Allied Health and Science in Neptune — Ranked 178th nationally
Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth — Ranked 183rd nationally

The publication used the same methodology as 2012 to compile its list of Best High School throughout the country.

According to the magazine, U.S. News partnered with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research (AIR), which implemented the rankings methodology.

To determine the Best High Schools national rankings, schools were first analyzed at the state level in terms of how well students in each school performed on state assessments, taking into account the test scores of disadvantaged students (low-income, Hispanic, and black), who tend to score lower on tests.

High schools that made it through this analysis were then eligible to be ranked nationally, in terms of college readiness. U.S. News determines the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work by analyzing student success in Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, both of which include college-level courses.

Montclair's Spies LIke Us Home

Former Russian Spies' Montclair Home Soon Up for Sale

The residence on Marquette Road has sat vacant since 2010, and upkeep has been irregular.

By Mike D'Onofrio

The Montclair home that until three years ago served as the headquarters for two Russians spies will soon be up for sale.

The two-story home at 31 Marquette Road is the former home of Cynthia and Richard Murphy, whose real names are Lyeia and Vladimir Guryev, and their two young children, aged 9 and 11. That was until 2010 when the two were uncovered as spies and arrested by U.S. law enforcement officials.

The home has sat vacant since the two agents of the Russian Federation were deported in 2010 with eight other secret agents in exchange for four U.S. operatives held in Russia.

Taped on the front door of the home are court documents and warnings, including one that reads “United States Marshal No Trespassing."
