Child Abuse Prevention Month Begins Tomorrow

Child Abuse Prevention Month Begins Tomorrow

Tomorrow marks the beginning of Child Abuse Prevention Month. As the nation turns its attention to healthy child development and child abuse prevention over the next 30 days, we wanted to highlight four ways each of us can make a difference next month and throughout the year:

a. Educate yourself and others on the issue of child abuse and neglect prevention.

b. Advocate for effective implementation of local healthy child development and child abuse prevention efforts.

c. Donate financially or through the contribution of professional expertise to a local charity that supports children and families.

d. Participate by volunteering for a local charity that supports children and families, or asking their local school boards, community centers, faith-based organizations, youth sports leagues, summer camps and the like to incorporate child abuse prevention and healthy child development into their dialogues and programs.

Watch for more announcements throughout the month!

Thank you, the SACA Team

Cheer Your Town: Cast A Vote For Montclair

Cheer Your Town: Cast A Vote For Montclair

Help the Township win a cash prize
Section Sponsored By
Following a path of incredible perseverance, residents helped Montclair become one of only 10 towns to win the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company's "Bring Back The 4th Contest" last year. Indeed, the town was presented with a check for $10,000 at a ceremony in early July, marked by great praise for Montclair's community spirit, allowing the town's July 4th fireworks celebration to go forward despite budget cuts.
Now there's a new contest to rally around. A "Cheer Your Town" contest sponsored by Reader's Digest allows people to vote for their community with an eye towards winning a cash prize.
So far, Montclair only has 31 "cheers" ranking it at number 872 out of nearly 10,000 towns.
The top "cheered" town so far is Rancho Cordova, California with 371,520 cheers. The top "cheered" town in New Jersey is Collingswood with 4,140 cheers.
A total of 10 Municipal Prizes will be awarded in the form of a donation to the towns with the most cheers plus promotional support through coverage in Reader's Digest outlets that include the 30 million-readership-strong flagship magazine, website, and iPad application.
The first place prize is $40,000; the second place prize is $25,000; the four runner-up prizes are $10,000; and the four category-based runner-up prizes are $10,000.
Entries must be received by May 30, 2011.

Going Walkabout

Got Sneakers? We're Walking Across Jersey

For a "Great Escape," get on walking shoes and look closer at our home state.
Section Sponsored By
As a Jersey girl from way back, who remembers when Parkway tolls were a quarter and still reads the instructions on the pump when I get my own gas in other places, I've seen a lot of my home state. I hit Route 17 the day I received my driver's license in Lodi, and I've been behind the wheel ever since.
The next several weekends will be different, as I've traded car keys (and beloved flip-flops)  for serious walking shoes.
The Cross-Jersey Walking Challenge is just what is sounds like, a chance to walk about 100 Jersey miles across the East Coast Greenway.  A free program, the walks are described best by the organizers:
The Cross-Jersey Walking Challenge will follow the East Coast Greenway’s entire New Jersey trail (plus some extensions, including a Manhattan walk) which represents about 100 miles out of its 3,000 miles length along the Eastern U.S. from Maine to Key West.

While walkers may choose to walk the distance at any time on their own, the FreeWalkers have scheduled three free organized walks that in total cover the entire 100 mile stretch of the ECG:

Mass transportation and carpooling is encouraged for the walks which happen to be mostly in proximity of the Northeast Corridor and other rail lines for easy connections. Busses and light rail can also be used for participants from various areas.
So much for "What exit?" jokes; the walks across New Jersey are a wonderful escape from daily reality, and an opportunity to remember why it's the Garden State. I hope to see you out there.
For more information on the program or related events contact Paul Kiczek, FreeWalkers, pkiczek@freewalkers.org.
