The novel explores the experience of British army officers being treated for shell shock during World War I. Inspired by her grandfather's experience of World War I, Barker draws extensively on first-person narratives from the period.

Meet Christian C. Sahner, author of Among the Ruins: Syria Past and Present.
As a civil war rages in Syria, historian Christian Sahner blends history, reportage and memoir in a piercing account of a country whose rich past resonates in its tragic present.
Sahner is a 2003 graduate of Columbia High School. He studied as a Rhodes Scholar at St John's College, Oxford and is currently completing his doctorate at Princeton.

Art & Music Reception
Our November art exhibit is the photography of Maplewoodian Ben Lowy, an award-winning photographer who covers major stories worldwide. His images of Iraq are some of the most iconic of the 21st Century. His image from Hurricane Sandy was the first iPhone photo to grace the cover of Time magazine.
The exhibit is Life During Wartime: iPhone Images from Afghanistan
After more than 30 years of war in Afghanistan, the obstinate violence no longer represents an assault on daily life. Rather, life, in its obstinacy, represents a daily assault on the violence.
A reception with live music will feature the Maplewood Community Music Trombone Quartet playing military marches, patriotic medlies and War era numbers.

World War I: Life in the Trenches
This talk will examine the lives of soldiers on the Western Front during the Great War. Topics to be discussed include the conditions in the trenches from 1914-1918, the technology and weaponry used, the reasons the trenches were constructed and well as how the experience of trench warfare shaped the way the war was later perceived and understood.
Mark C. Molesky is Associate Professor of History at Seton Hall University. He received his A.M. and Ph.D. in European history at Harvard University. He is completing a book on the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755.

The Coalition on Race's Two Towns, One Book is designed to encourage residents to read and discuss a selected book that is related to an issue or experience faced by our community. This year's selection is The Price of Paradise: The Costs of Inequality and a Vision for a More Equitable America, by David Troutt.
Program Director, Audrey Rowe says, "This book will provide an excellent launching point for a thoughtful and engaging discussion about how our lives in Maplewood/South Orange are tied to what happens in Newark and other New Jersey communities."
David Troutt is Professor of Law and Justice at the Rutgers University-Newark Law School.

A picturesque town in Essex County, Maplewood is located on the East Branch of the Rahway River. Originally consisting of farms, mills and orchards, Maplewood is now a great mix of residential and commercial areas, culminating in the jewel of a downtown village and coming together to create a charming, tight-knit and diversified community. With its large variety of cuisines to choose from, Maplewood recently started a yearly town-wide Restaurant Week with over 30 eateries participating.
Easily accessible by its throughways and the New Jersey Transit, it's no surprise Maplewood has been ranked several times as one of the most desirable places to live in America by a number of surveys.
