"The elementary schools in the SOMA school district are all great. I wouldn't worry about which one you are zoned for in your house hunt. We had heard that Tuscan was the prime school when we were first looking, but we love Clinton which is the ESL school and a little more diverse. I've never met anyone that doesn't love their zoned school.
There are plenty of full time preschools but none of them are public. We like the South Mountain YMCA and have heard good things about Village Babies. Neither one is any cheaper than Brooklyn daycare. We had googled several low cost options before moving but weren't comfortable with them after visiting."
