Did you know that on this day in 1879, Thomas Edison invented a
workable electric light at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New
Jersey? This model used a platinum filament, but the next year
he found an alternative and it proved to be the key in longer
lasting, affordable light bulbs. He began his research in 1878
to invent a safe, inexpensive electric light that would
eventually replace the gaslight. He was financially backed by
J.P. Morgan (no comma) and others. It wasn't until 1981 when he
set up an electric light company in Newark.
