"We moved from Bushwick, where our nearest playground was a block away, and it was common for our kids to find well-known playmates or to make new friends — and nine months later, we are happy to say that we have found a wonderful, tight-knit community in Maplewood.
Our oldest, who is almost 4, goes to preschool two days a week and has made a bunch of friends. We have met nearly all her classmates' parents during drop-off and pick-up, and already have a busy schedule of home playdates, playground meetups and birthday parties galore. Our walk to the nearest playgrounds (5-10 minutes, including one at our local elementary school) isn't much longer than in our old neighborhood — and we have the benefit of plenty of green space and more kid-safe areas. There are at least two new families on our block, each with two small kids around the same age as our brood, and tons of children up and down the block.
Within a day of moving here, our neighbors (also with two kids) invited us to the member-only Maplewood Community Pool ( http://twp.maplewood.nj.us/index.aspx?NID=529 ), which we quickly fell in love with — three pools, diving platforms, water slides, swimming lessons and tons of events for adults and children.
There are also plenty of activities in the area, from ballet class to soccer, indoor play spaces (for those long winter days) to tennis courts, ponds, great libraries and a vibrant downtown area. A short drive away is the "pirate ship park" ( http://www.essexcountyparks.org/south-mountain/the-waterfront ) and a kid-friendly hiking trail complete with faerie houses ( http://gonehikin.blogspot.com/2011/09/south-mountain-reservation-nj-locust.html ).
We're bracing for the onslaught of activities that will inevitably follow once our next two kids (ages 2.5 years and 9 months) start preschool, pre-K, etc, and begin to make friends there. But as community, there's definitely no shortage of it in Maplewood!
