UN Celebrates Day of the Girl: Maplewood's Stephanie Jelly Inspires!

United Nations Establishes October 11th as International Day of the Girl

October 10, 2012

Thanks to my friend, Ian Grodman, I made made aware of this article:

It is estimated that by 2015, women will make up 64% of the world’s adult population who cannot read and although America’s drop out rate is higher for boys, one in four girls do not finish high school. Lack of education and scarce opportunities in a downward economy leave many searching for a solution to lift the the spirits and soicio-economic status of women and girls across our nation, 55.2 percent of the 42.9 million and growing living in poverty in the United States (American Community Survey data, 2009).

While school based programs are developing curriculum to combat gender-based violence and reduce the high school drop out rate across the country, individuals and grassroots organizations continue to brilliantly engage and encourage girls and young women to empower themselves in their communities.

The United Nations established October 11 as the annual International Day of the Girl Child supported and co-sponsored by the United States and 97 other countries and has called upon communities across the globe to recognize that girls worldwide face many injustices such as discrimination, gender stereotypes, child marriage and lack of education. Nearly 100 cities around the United States have recognized the day, the state of Maryland being the first to declare October 11 as the Day of the Girl.

Take action! Find a local government official, school teacher or local organization who can help you organize an action plan and register your project big or small. Take a look at some of the wonderful girls organizations and how they bring awareness to their communities in partnership with community leaders, teachers and local business owners. Here are some of the crew at umojawa’s picks for doing good while promoting an end to educational inequality near and far:

She’s the First is a not-for-profit that sponsors girls’ education in the developing world, helping them be the first in their families to graduate. In the process, She’s the First fosters leadership and global awareness in young Americans, by inspiring them to lead creative fundraisers and correspond with sponsored students. Our efforts shape a rising generation of well-educated global leaders, future philanthropists, and cross-cultural communicators.

Girl Effect campaign is actually hundreds of thousands of campaigns-that’s how change happens. Watch this powerful video and join Girl Effect and make a change.

Half the Sky is cutting across platforms to ignite the change needed to put an end to the oppression of women and girls worldwide, the defining issue of our time. Inspired by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book of the same name, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to not only raise awareness of women’s issues, but to also provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women. Change is possible, and you can be part of the solution. Girls For A Change (GFC) is a national organization that empowers girls to create social change. We invite young women to design, lead, fund and implement social change projects that tackle issues girls face in their own neighborhoods. Take a stand. Encourage your local officials to join the movement and submit your proclamation. Watch the 3-minute video, produced by Girls for a Change, on how to get a proclamation: www.DayOfTheGirl.org/ActNow
