Celluloid Candy Returns, Maple Leaf Awards, SOMbike Rides and Jazz Is Appreciated

Local funny and talented ladies return, downtown Millburn celebrates a week of specials, Oscar-winning shorts at The Burgdorff, plus typing cows, some biking, some hiking, and big book readings this weekend.

The coming April Fool's Day weekend is so packed with stellar events and activities to partake of that, this time out, we decided to start our listing early, beginning with  Thursday instead.  No joke!
Highlights Thursday evening include a screening at Seton Hall University of the film Iron Jawed Angels, starring Hilary Swank and Angelica Huston.  Funny Ladies 2 happens at Highland Place Restaurant the same night, featuring some of the best comediennes from our local area doing their hilarious shtick live.  And, just around the corner, don't miss the book discussion and signing at Words with the authors of Come Together: The Business Wisdom of The Beatles, an enlightening business case study of how the lads from Liverpool became an enduring multi-billion-dollar franchise.
Other big highlights this weekend include the kick-off of Downtown Millburn Week and Restaurant Week, featuring sales, discounts, and special events at many Millburn retailers and food establishments throughout downtown, starting Saturday and continuing on the entire week.   The children's classic Click, Clack, Moo takes over the stage at the Paper Mill Playhouse for a fun, live rendition on Saturday morning.  Studio B and their popular Celluloid Candy series returns to The Burgdorff Center on Sunday for a wonderful afternoon of Oscar winning short animated films, fit for the entire family.  
The 43rd Annual Maple Leaf Awards Ceremony and brunch takes place Sunday at the Woman's Club of Maplewood.  And don't forget SOMBike's family ride on Sunday starting in South Orange, Song Swap on Saturday in Millburn, and 1978 Art Center's jazz film screenings in Maplewood on Sunday.

  • Iron Jawed Angels Film ScreeningFrom SHU: "The League of Women Voters and Seton Hall co-sponsor a presentation of the film Iron Jawed Angels.  The film stars Hilary Swank, Angelica Huston, Frances O’Connor, and Julia Ormond and is the story of two prominent women who fought for women’s suffrage in the United States -- Alice Paul and Lucy Burns organized protests, went to jail and staged hunger strikes, continuing to fight for the 19th Amendment and eventually prevailing.  These women risked their lives to fight for what we so often take for granted.  Parking is available at the Seton Hall parking deck.  For more details please call 973-313-1535.  The movie will be shown in the Nursing Building Amphitheater, NU 113.   Free and open to the public.  Thursday, 7:00pm, South Orange
  • Come Together: The Business Wisdom of the Beatles at WordsFrom Words: "Richard Courtney and George Cassidy will sign copies of their new book Come Together: The Business Wisdom of the Beatles on Thursday.  Released  on March 28, Come Together unveils the historic rock band as the ultimate business case study, chronicling the calculated and often brilliant effort that turned four teenaged greasers from Liverpool, England, into a multi-billion-dollar franchise with multigenerational appeal.  The Nashville-based authors will be in the area for their debut appearance at The Fest for Beatles fans, one of the most highly regarded celebrations for Beatles fans in the country.  Thursday, 7:30pm, Maplewood

  • The Taliban Shuffle at WordsFrom Words: "We are extremely proud to feature the New Jersey premier of one of the nation's most talked-about books, The Taliban Shuffle, Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan straight from its launch at the Council of Foreign Relations.   • Downtown Millburn WeekBeginning this Saturday and continuing all week long, the non-profit Downtown Millburn group has enlisted many the local retailers and merchants to offer customers great in-store promotions, sales, and special events, plus super contests to win an iPad and a Kindle, when you enter at a participating store.  This celebratory week is combines with a Restaurant Week in Millburn too, so everyone should make sure to check out the specials and menus at eating establishments throughout the neighborhood. Saturday to April 9, Millburn
  • CLICK, CLACK, MOO at the Paper Mill PlayhouseFrom Theatreworks USA: "When his granddaughter Jenny comes for a visit, Farmer Brown declares the farm a tech-free zone.  Tell that to the shivering cows in the barn who use her computer to type messages requesting blankets in this hilariously "mooooo-ving" new musical!  Recommended for ages 4 and up."  $15 for orchestra and box seats and $12 for mezzanine seats.  Saturday, 10:00am, Millburn

  • 43rd Annual Maple Leaf Award CeremonyThe 43rd annual Maple Leaf Award Ceremony and brunch will be held at the Woman’s Club of Maplewood, with Janet Crane, Mark Mucci, and Irene Kosinski being honored as recipients of the Maple Leaf Award this year.  The event will begin promptly, so people should plan to arrive earlier in order to find seating.  The cost is $25.00 per person, and reservations and payment in advance are required.  Sunday, 1:30pm, Maplewood
