Moving to Maplewood: This Old Man...he played 2...he played knick-knack on my shoe

Today's closing was out of the ordinary. First, it was a $1,000,000+ home in Maplewood. However, what made it STAND out was one of the gifts the seller left behind--a well worn shoe from the late 1800's. She found the shoe when she renovated the home and kept it in a special place since. Why? Well legend has it that shoes were often put in areas of the home to ward off evil (see below for article specifically addressing this issue).

Of course, I couldn't help but start humming and then singing:

My research turned up the following:

When owners of old houses begin renovations, they should be aware that they might turn up some unexpected treasures in the walls of their homes. Two Wayland families have discovered a trove of old shoes hidden in the house walls, a reflection of an ancient superstition that hiding shoes in a house as it was being built, would ward off evil.

Jennifer Swope, assistant curator of the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities, points out that although hundreds of these concealed shoes have been found in buildings in both Europe and Eastern United States no one has ever photographed these finds in the exact site where they have been found.

When tearing out the wall in an old chaise house about eighteen years ago, James and Mary Reed found a baby's white, ankle-high shoe, some small wooden toys and some ears of corn. Their Old Sudbury Road home has been the site of so many additions since the earliest part was built about 1750 that they were not sure whether the shoes were hidden at the time the chaise house was built or in a later renovation.

Why would shoes be deliberately built into a home or public building? Some have speculated that the tradition stems from the prehistoric custom of killing a person and placing the body in the foundation to insure that the building holds together. Later shoes were used as a substitute for a human sacrifice. Shoes may have been chosen, because over time they take on and keep the shape of the wearer's foot. Shoes were hidden near openings in the home--doors, windows, chimneys--the perceived weak places in the building that were thus protected from evil by the shoe owner's spirit.

About half the shoes registered in the concealment index are children's shoes. Women's shoes are more common than men's. Shoes are almost invariably well worn, perhaps because the donor didn't want to waste an expensive new shoe on the project, or perhaps because a well-worn shoe is more likely to retain the shape of the wearer's foot and hence his spirit. Though shoes are the common denominator, more than two hundred different personal possessions--coins, spoons, pots, goblets, food, knives, toys, gloves, pipes, even chicken and cat bones--have been found hidden with them.

Considering how widespread and long lasting this folk belief has been, it is curious that nowhere was it described in writing until references began to appear in mid-twentieth century archaeology literature in scholarly journals. Some speculate the tradition of hiding shoes was a male superstition, kept secret almost out of fear that telling about it would reduce its effectiveness. Others feel contemporary writers did not describe it since superstition ran counter to prevailing religious beliefs and the Puritans punishment of witchcraft and magic was well-known.

When removing walls especially around windows and doors, under roof rafters and behind old chimneys, homeowners should be aware of the possibility of turning up concealment shoes. While most are found in eighteenth and nineteenth century homes, a find hidden as late as 1935 has been reported. If shoes are found, they should left exactly as they were discovered and photographed. Items found with the shoes are as important as the shoes themselves and should also be saved.

There was a time when we thought of art, and the creation of art, as a “place based” opportunity. You went to the theater, the museum, or the recital hall to experience the arts. But in recent years, creative people have realized that art can happen virtually anywhere, anytime. And that engaging people in the artistic process in new and innovative ways adds a spark, sometimes a note of spontaneity, and often a very different perspective on how creative expression can touch people’s lives.

So, welcome to Playin’ Around South Orange, a new and fun way for residents and visitors to enjoy live music al fresco! Everyone has artistic ability. You may not know how to play the piano, but most people can hum or sing or just clap along. And everyone can choose (or not) to appreciate and listen to someone playing or performing.

And speaking of “appreciation” you probably noticed that this piano looks a bit different than one you’d find in your home. We hope you will appreciate the beauty of these exquisite painted pianos, transformed into works of art themselves by five extraordinary local painters: Russell Christian, Dan Fenelon, Mikel Frank, Marie Glynn, and Susan C. Harris. We are also grateful to the students of Greek Life at SHU for painting the piano on campus.

The pianos situated around South Orange are here for your enjoyment. We hope that the keys to these pianos are “tickled” every day and that they cause you to smile, or have a moment’s respite from your daily routine, give you an uplifting feeling, and ultimately move you in some positive way.

From the Burg to the Barrio, a 45-minute documentary video, explores the challenges facing the community of Chambersburg in Trenton, New Jersey. Long recognized as the “Little Italy” of Trenton, famous for its Italian restaurants, bakeries, and groceries, the ‘Burg is also a well-established working class neighborhood where Italian families lived in close proximity to local businesses and to each other. Today, the ‘Burg still attracts newly-arrived immigrant families, but this time they are from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and other Latin American countries. Italian bakeries continue to bake bread and pastries daily, but they operate alongside bodegas and restaurants that cater to the Latino population. From the Burg to the Barrio shows an ethnic neighborhood in transition with all of its tensions and contrasts as differing cultures meet. (Documentary)

Julie, however, wants more last go at her theatrical career; but she does not want to do it without Mark. It starts with just one step. They must overcome their fear of rejection and failure. It’s all or nothing. There is no plan B. The show must go on! But will they just end up right back where they started? Julie pulls together a group of theater misfits and a few stars which lead to hilarious hi-jinx and a musical adaptation of Chekhov's 'The Seagull'.

AliveAndKickn takes the game of soccer, and uses it as an awareness and fund raising mechanism for reaching an audience that wouldn't ordinarily think of colon cancer. Will it be like breast cancer 30 years ago? No one really knows, but as the #2 cancer killer, the numbers warrant it. And as the number one youth sport, soccer awareness warrants the same respect. A larger than life character could put it all together.

The Move-Up Buyer, What a Difference a Year Can Make!

According to KCM and Case Shiller: New reports are revealing that the number of existing home owners purchasing a house is beginning to increase. Some are moving up, some are downsizing and others are making a lateral move.

Another study shows that over 75% of these buyers will, in fact, be in that first category: a move-up buyer. These can often be the most tricky of deal, from personal experience, as a these buyers are also sellers and we all know an ideal scenario is to have a same-day closing (which we can talk about later).

There is no way for us to predict the future, as I always advise my clients, but I do suggest for them to look at what we do know and in this case we can look at what happened over the last year. Let’s look at buyers that considered moving up last year but decided to wait instead.

Assume they had a home worth $300,000 and were looking at a home for $400,000 (putting 10% down they would get a mortgage of $360,000). By waiting, their house appreciated by 12% over the last year (national average based on the Case Shiller Pricing Index). Their $300,000 home would now be worth $336,000. But, the $400,000 home would now be worth $448,000 (requiring a mortgage of $403,200).
So, in addition to having to pay more, rates have climbed one full percentage point and this will cost this potential home buyer an extra $426 per month. Here is a table showing what additional monthly cost would be incurred by waiting:
